Most of us spend the better part of our lives in our heads, thinking rather than being. We put so much of our energy into planning, rationalizing, judging, worrying and regretting that we often lose touch with ourselves and the fact that we are a part of something so much bigger.
Grounding connects us to the present moment. It pulls us into our physical experience of right now, and in the process, creates a sense of ease in the mind and stability in the body. Grounding creates calm, destroys stress, and reminds us of who we are by diverting our attention from thinking and making us feel at home in our own bodies.
The process of grounding is an invitation to trust that we are and will be supported. It’s a reminder of our deep connection to the earth beneath us, and the power it has to affect the way we think, feel and express ourselves.
Physically, grounding in yoga involves establishing a stable foundation through proper alignment and posture. Practitioners are encouraged to distribute their weight evenly, engage muscles, and maintain a strong connection with the ground through their feet or other points of contact. This stability helps in holding yoga poses (asanas) and allows for a deeper, more controlled practice.
Here are some common yoga grounding practices:
Rooted Poses: Practicing standing yoga poses like Tadasana (Mountain Pose) or Virabhadrasana (Warrior Pose)
Balancing Poses: Balancing poses such as Tree Pose (Vrikshasana) or Eagle Pose (Garudasana)
Breath Awareness: Concentrating on the breath, especially the sensation of the breath moving in and out, helps in grounding the mind. Deep, mindful breathing calms the nervous system and centers your focus.
Yoga Nidra: Also known as yogic sleep, this practice involves deep relaxation and guided meditation. It helps in grounding the mind and body
Mindfulness Meditation: Mindfulness practices, where you observe your thoughts and sensations without judgment, help in grounding the mind and cultivating awareness of the present moment.
